Why was Mayfest cancelled?

The city cancelled Mayfest based on CDC guidelines as interpreted by the county medical authority because scheduled events included FWISD children. Mayfest has always been a family friendly, kid-centered entertainment event. Fort Worth has cancelled classes for the entire 80,000 student district to prevent the spread of the H1N1 to our children and their families. The same proactive approach was applied to this event, held in a city park, for the safety of the community.
Now it's time to ensure Mayfest can return next year!

From WFAA Channel 8, Sunday, May 3rd:

Mayfest has a long, rich history of serving the Fort Worth community. The festival began in 1973 as a celebration of the beautification and improvement of the Trinity River and greenbelt.

This year, the the City of Fort Worth reluctantly decided that due to the outbreak of H1N1 Flu virus--Mayfest had to be cancelled. This has left Mayfest, Inc. with over $400,000 in unpaid bills!

Musicians who were scheduled to play at Mayfest--and many others who were not--are exploring the possibility of performing a benefit concert to help the Mayfest Organization pay the enormous bill for having to cancel Mayfest.
